Ecologists document, study, and forecast ecosystem changes, but ecologists and non-specialists alike struggle against ongoing climatic change and its effects. Art-science collaborations open intellectual and aesthetic spaces in which to explore and study this cognitive dissonance and create new opportunities to engage broader audiences in developing strategies for dealing with environmental change. We illustrate how our three collaborative projects, Novel Ecosystem Generator, Warming Warning, and Hemlock Hospice, envision how novel ecosystems come about, paces of environmental change, and strategies for coping with and living in a rapidly changing world.
