How can plants facilitate resilience to the global threat of climate change and its impacts on biodiversity? To answer this, we must document past and present levels of plant diversity while also looking to the future. To bridge these timescales, we must synthesize studies across diverse topics, ranging from studying historic patterns and drivers of plant evolution to conducting detailed experiments. By taking a multi-pronged approach, we can gain a deeper understanding of how biodiversity arises and may respond to global change, enabling us to build a more resilient future.
