Species observation data is often distributed across many different places online and in the literature. Pairing these diverse data types can increase the spatial and temporal scale of observations, but can be challenging because of differences in observer biases, non-standard formats for storage, and heterogenous data and metadata. Comparing these data sources and understanding and controlling for biases and limitations is key to harnessing the distributed power of citizen science data and legacy collections data for ecological studies.
