Pharmaceuticals and personal care products have been detected in surface waters around the world and interact with aquatic organisms, which are key ecosystem drivers and bellwether indicators. We highlight the relationship between anthropogenic contaminants and the function of benthic algae and larval organisms. We found biofilm metabolism is altered when exposed to nano-titanium, a compound found in sunscreens and clothing. We also found insect repellent ingredients, permethrin and DEET, affect development and mortality of larval amphibians. With the increase and inability to remove certain contaminants from surface waters, exposure may not only alter ecosystem function, but ultimately affect human health.
