Antibiotic resistance is an emerging global issue that affects human health, agriculture, economies, and ecosystems. Antibiotic resistance is most commonly studied in medical settings, but there is growing concern about environmental dissemination. Aquatic ecosystems are important vectors for the environmental spread of resistance, and often become contaminated with agricultural runoff and wastewater treatment plant effluent following storm events. As the frequency and magnitude of storm events increases with climate warming, this problem will be exacerbated. This presentation will discuss the unique challenges this brings to urban river ecosystems.
