FT 2 - Agroecology in Kentucky: Organic Agriculture, Bees, Cover Crops, Food Waste and More

Sunday, August 11, 2019: 6:30 AM-5:00 PM
Market Street Pre-function, Kentucky International Convention Center
Trip Leader:
Rebecca L. McCulley
Co-leaders:
Krista L. Jacobsen , Erin R. Haramoto , David Gonthier and Clare Rittschof
This one-day field trip will include a tour of a local organic vegetable and meat producer (Mac Stone’s Elmwood Farm) to hear about their transition from tobacco to organic production, the agricultural practices they employ, the people they sell too, and nutrient cycling research being conducted on-farm to evaluate opportunities for sustainable intensification. We will then proceed to Spindletop Farm (one of the University of Kentucky’s research farms) to learn about the role of weeds in agriculture for honeybee health, monarch way stations and agriculture, and the interactions of cover crop choices and weed dynamics. Next, will be the South Farm (another UK research farm) where we will learn about the Sustainable Agriculture program, see the operations of the organic CSA run on-site, learn about innovative ways to help reduce food waste from the CSA, high tunnel production, and netting options for pest control on blackberries. And finally, we will visit the Kentucky State University famer and learn about hemp production.

Registration Fee: $50
