Ecological impacts of agricultural management are most evident in landscapes with large-scale commercial agriculture, but sustainable solutions to ecological challenges are frequently site-specific and not necessarily applicable across a region, state, or nation. There are also many small-scale agricultural initiatives aimed at agricultural resilience that rely on more diversified cropping systems and management strategies than those most commonly researched for commercial agricultural systems. This workshop will provide a forum for reviewing examples of (1) agricultural innovations that successfully harmonize ecological conditions with agricultural production, and (2) community-based research that supports sustainable agroecosystems. Examples from at least two agricultural communities in the United States and one international agricultural community will be presented. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and then discuss the challenges for transferring knowledge from the case studies to a broader regional context. Participants in the workshop will be invited to share further examples of small-scale agroecosystem management strategies in small group breakout discussions. The workshop will conclude by reconvening, comparing examples, and mapping the theoretical collective impact of diversified strategies that are designed for local site conditions. Outcomes of the workshop will inform future sessions and panel discussions at the Ecological Society of America that advance new directions for agroecology.
