As an ecologist working in local government, I often find myself stuck between what’s best and what’s feasible. This was also true of academic research. But in government, these decisions can determine the health of very real ecosystems within our city. While I strive for the ideal, the imperfect, second best is usually what I end up with. This is sometimes discouraging but making positive ecological improvement was never going to be easy. Fortunately, I’m not doing it alone.
