Background/Question/Methods

Significant environmental strides can only be made when effective environmental leadership comes from all stakeholders and not exclusively those in the science sector. Many non-scientists misunderstand the scientific process and become confused and alienated from seemingly contradictory and conflicting information. Only when non-scientists understand the scientific process can they make informed decisions and better choices regarding environmental issues. With an increased understanding of science, the scientific process and the array of sub-disciplines required to effectively address environmental concerns, non-scientists can make significant contributions in environmental leadership.

Results/Conclusions

Through a series of case studies and participation in citizen science projects, students in a biology course for non-majors became active participants in the scientific process, increasing their awareness of the process and deepening their understanding of its strength and limitations. The challenges and successes of the case studies and projects will be highlighted.
