Racial, cultural, and gender diversity have become important issues in universities throughout the country.  The University of Michigan, initially through an NSF ADVANCE grant and subsequently with University funding, initiated a training program to introduce faculty to the scholarly literature on implicit bias and related topics and how they may influence faculty search processes. For the past 14 years the ADVANCE program has organized a series of workshops given by a committee of senior faculty, the STRIDE committee (Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Increase Diversity and Excellence).  The workshop includes a power point presentation that 1) documents the scholarly research on themes such as implicit bias, stereotype threat, schemas, and other concepts, and 2) gives concrete advice on what procedures do and do not work for recruiting and hiring a diverse faculty.  In this session we will describe the efforts of the STRIDE committee over the years and present the faculty recruitment workshop to attendees.
