Join ESA’s Urban Ecosystem Ecology and Environmental Justice Sections, and a group of architects and planners on a Crosstown Walk to explore environmental and socioeconomic change in a post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans neighborhood. The Crosstown Walk is a course module developed for undergraduate and graduate courses in ecology, design, planning, and the social sciences.  Students collect ecological and social data to understand the socio-ecological drivers of environmental change in cities. The Crosstown Walk is particularly useful as a tool that illustrates key concepts about urban ecology and environmental justice. Post-Katrina New Orleans serves as an environmental justice case study of management, planning, and design decisions that have had very different consequences based on the race and economic status of the resident.  Our two mile walk will be along Washington Avenue in New Orleans’ Central City/Garden District Area. The walk starts in a African American neighborhood that and ends at the Mississippi River in the Irish Channel neighborhood.  During the walk we will meet with local architects and planners who have participated in community-based projects that are designed to be both resilient and just.  We will collect data on temperature, tree canopy cover, birds, insects, and vegetation during the walk. At the conclusion of the walk we will review our findings from the walk and discuss how the module can be used in different courses and settings, and opportunities to participate in a project using data from Crosstown Walks from cities around the world.
