International concern has been voiced regarding the impact of hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico. Among the responses has been a hopeful call for the rebuilding of Puerto Rico along ecological principles and principles of social justice, especially regarding energy and agriculture. Hoping to tap the talents and expertise of the membership of ESA we propose to hold a workshop on the just and ecological recovery of Puerto Rico focusing on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, urban ecosystems, and costal ecosystems in Puerto Rico. This workshop will feature five to eight speakers, who will briefly introduce the workshop topics within the post-hurricane Puerto Rican context, and a speaker that will provide an analysis of the above topics through a political lens to describe the non-ecological challenges in pre and post-hurricane Puerto Rico. The format will be an initial plenary with short presentations/questions, followed by breakout sessions to discuss potential research/action projects for each theme, and a final plenary to share the ideas that emerged from the breakout sessions.  The general goals will be 1) information sharing about the socio-ecological situation in post-hurricane Puerto Rico among interested parties in ESA, and 2) development of proposals from teams of researchers to engage in the general process of ecological rebuilding of a resilient Puerto Rico.

Registration Fee: $25
