The international bodies that manage the Antarctic pride themselves on science-based decision making and the ideals of feedback management, but the reality is that key data are unavailable to the people who need it most. To address this shortfall, we have integrated automated pipelines for satellite image interpretation with detailed population models and easy-to-use internet-based decision support tools. In building our application, the Mapping Application for Penguin Populations and Projected Dynamics, we've learned a lot about how to make the most of high-tech tools in a system still rooted in very low-tech geopolitics.
