Trends in ecosystem services, biodiversity and their direct and indirect drivers were assessed for Europe and CentralAsia by a team of more than one hundred experts from 2015 to 2018, along with scenarios and pathways for future development and options for decision makers. The assessment was approved in March 2018 by the 126 member states of IPBES.
Results/Conclusions
The assessment reports substantial value of ecosystem services, increasing trends in the use of some ecosystem services to the detriment of others and decreasing trends in marine, freshwater and terrestrial biodiversity. It reports the role of land use, climate change, pollution and invasive alien speices for these trends and assesses the underlying indirect drivers. It identifies types of sceanrios and pathways for future development, analyses their implications for biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well being. Finally, it presents opportunities for decision makers.
