The pangs of denitrification research are well known among those who study it, yet the important societal implications of this microbial process continue to inspire an increasing number of publications on the topic each year. Our meta-analysis of controls on terrestrial denitrification delves into the history of denitrification study to reveal that much of the work we do today confirms knowledge we already know (and learned quite some time ago) rather than advancing the field. We propose a shift from the current architecture for studying denitrification toward one that can generate a predictive framework for soil denitrification across ecosystems.
