Research data are fundamental to science. Researchers need credit for their contributions. Reproducible science requires a transparent citation to the version of data used for analysis. And yet, these are not possible without a strong culture of data citation, which currently is uncommon. The Making Data Count project promotes such a culture by collating usage and citation metrics from the scientific literature and repositories. DataONE displays metrics on who is citing and using researchers' data, and aggregates views of usage and citation to show how citation practices change through time for researcher, repository, and funder collections of data.
