When Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012, New Yorkers were not invincible to its natural forces. It was an example of what they may see in the future. The Science and Resilience Institute brings together diverse groups to produce integrated knowledge that can be used to increase biodiversity, well-being and adaptive capacity in coastal communities and waters surrounding Jamaica Bay and New York City. Conversations about this disaster and threats of future disasters have prompted new research as well as communication with scientists and public agencies to share knowledge and create better management and tools to be resilient.
