Experience Portland and its unique combination of ecology and environmental art. This Portland bike tour is lead by ecologist Toby Query and artist Linda Wysong. This trip will stop to view and discuss important public art works confronting ecological processes and environmental legacy. We will also talk and discuss ecological stewardship in Portland at a wildlife refuge, along the river and at various stormwater swales along the journey. The group bikes on the Springwater Trail along the Willamette River to
Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, a floodplain wetland. The refuge was once a sanitation landfill that has undergone extensive restoration since 1969. There will be stops at a Water Education Plaza and other art & science installations. For lunch, we arrive at the DIY gallery,
Indivisible and have a conversation with local environmental artists about the place of art within ecology and environmentalism. If you are interested in wetland restoration, stormwater swales, education, art as public dialog, parks, urban sustainability, and moderate exercise, this is the field trip for you!
Registration Fee: $65
Equipment and Attire: Participants should be prepared for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Be prepared to bicycle 12 miles mostly along flat bike paths, but there will be some moderate hills and city traffic. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and a backpack. Lunch will be provided.
