Background/Question/Methods

Super Typhoon Merant is the strongest typhoon that landed in Hokkien since 1949. The continuous rainstorm has caused great damage to the Hokkien Golden Triangle of China. In this paper, the MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) was used to investigate the change of vegetation coverage in the Hokkien Golden Triangle of China before and after typhoon. The application of tropical cyclone potential influence index TCPI (Tropical Cyclone Potential Impact) was used for comprehensive characterization of tropical cyclone intensity, wind, wind speed, duration and other factor. Divided the built-up area and non-built area in the Hokkien Golden Triangle of China into different regions according to the different radii of wind circles. Then Correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between TCPI and EVI in different influence areas.

Results/Conclusions

The results showed that: TCPI was significantly correlated with EVI, and different in the built-up area and the non built area. The vegetation index of built-up areas was affected greatly than the non built up area, and the correlation index of the vegetation index change and TCPI in built-up areas was significantly larger than the non built up areas which indicates that the ecological effects of Merant on built-up area was higher than that of the non built up area. On this basis, this paper analyzed the abnormal value of different regions and finds out the area which was greatly affected by the typhoon disaster in order to provide the basis for future protection.
