IGN 5-3 - Benefits of art: Sci practice as a an ecology graduate student

Tuesday, August 8, 2017
C123, Oregon Convention Center
Robert C. Ornelas, Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
I didn’t formally engage in any art-making until I started playing music with a 20-person brass band from Providence. I began embroidering to pass time traveling between shows. I now realize that carrying my creative practice through graduate school has benefited me as an ecologist, teacher, and colleague. Whether you have a well-established art practice or not, I encourage you to try new creative projects and make more time for art each day—in other words, find your version of a 20-person brass band from Providence.
