Forest discovery: An arts, humanities, and environmental science experience of place

Deep in the Oregon Cascades, beneath a canopy of ancient evergreen, students listen to stories about rainfall and water science; they draw spotted owl comics, analyze climate data, and create sound maps. As they reflect on their own special places, they compare shades of green, watch a scientist discuss morticulture, and imagine the forest after a storm, a fire, a landslide. Weaving art with science, self with community, person with place in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest allows for conservation learning, as well as empathetic awareness, so that knowledge, awe, and responsibility come together as one cohesive experience of place.
