In this time of rapid ocean change, to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans” takes on new urgency. Marine species distributions are shifting faster than on land, and this can upend both fisheries and conservation efforts. Ecological science can play a critical role in developing new approaches for adapting to ocean change. As initial steps, I will show that a few basic principles can produce MPA networks robust to climate change, that MPAs can harness evolutionary processes and facilitate coral reef survival, and that shifting species have cascading consequences for food webs, sustainable fishing levels, and even international diplomacy globally.
