Tenure-track positions come with unique challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities for new faculty. Whether new faculty are coming from postdocs, contingent faculty positions, or directly from graduate school, time allocation to research, teaching, and service can be difficult to manage. Expectations and tenure guidelines vary across institutions and figuring out what really matters and what doesn’t can be a challenging task. This Ignite session will address many of the common areas of concern for new tenure-track faculty. We have assembled tenured and tenure-track faculty from large and small research universities and from primarily undergraduate institutions to share their diverse perspectives and strategies for managing the pre-tenure years. Each speaker will give a 5-minute “ignite-style” talk about their particular perspective, followed by open Q&A to address topics such as establishing and growing your research group, managing startup, teaching your first class, integrating teaching and research, how to say “no”, finding and being a good mentor, choosing effective collaborators, work/life balance, getting writing done, and how to work with your tenure committee. We expect participants to leave with a concrete set of tips and strategies that they can implement right away, or use for planning once they land a tenure-track position, and an expanded network of early career peers. The session is organized by the Early Career Ecologist and the Researchers at Undergraduate Institutions Sections.
