Innovative Strategies for Teaching in the Plant Sciences (CANCELLED)

Wednesday, August 12, 2015: 8:00 PM-10:00 PM
315, Baltimore Convention Center
Organizer:
Karen Hall
Co-organizer:
Sunshine L. Brosi
In this session, ethnobiologist authors will serve on a panel focused on innovative teaching that encourages audience dialog to collectively improve teaching and learning. In particular, ethnobiological approaches in the classroom help to provide relevance to diverse students who might otherwise be disconnected.

In 2014, Cassandra Quave edited the Springer volume, “Innovative Strategies for Teaching in the Plant Sciences”. Chapter authors were largely pulled from the membership the Open Science Network in Ethnobiology (OSN). Just prior to Quave’s publication, this NSF-funded Research Coordination Network of ethnobiologists collaborated to produce a mimic document entitled “Vision and Change in Ethnobiology Education in the U.S.A.: Recommended Curriculum Assessment Guidelines” in 2013. The group has additionally hosted several Teaching Workshops at ethnobiological society annual meetings. Through the Society for Economic Botany, OSN members are sharing their collective wisdom through Life DiscoveryEd Digital Library, Econbot portal. Audience members will learn about the use of innovative strategies in the classroom from experienced ethnobiologist educators, gain knowledge of the core concepts and competencies of ethnobiology, and network with members of OSN.
