When scientists share their work and its value with local groups, science enters into the local dialogue, and researchers become visible, accessible community resources. The first step in connecting with local groups involves the exciting and challenging work of making your science understandable and interesting to members of the public.

At this interactive workshop, scientists from all disciplines and of all communications-experience levels will learn how to communicate science basics to people in their communities in a relevant, engaging, and memorable way. You will learn how to create an effective message about your research, as well as how to connect with community groups and frame and tailor your presentation for the audience. You will also have the chance to practice delivering your message, and then receive feedback from the experts and your peers.

You will come away from this workshop understanding how to: 1) identify and reach out to community groups; 2) create powerful and clear talking points that will resonate with any public audience; 3) effectively deliver your message; and  4) what next steps you can take to begin a conversation with your local groups.

Prerequisites: This workshop is designed for scientists who want to learn how to more effectively communicate their research, as opposed to policy professionals, outreach specialists, journalists, or other professional communicators.

Registration Fee: $25
