We propose a workshop to introduce participants to presently available funding opportunities and the search engines/websites used to find them. In addition, participants will hear about the experiences of their peers (undergraduate and graduate) in searching for and applying for funding. We aim to stress the importance of persistence and maintenance of a positive attitude throughout this process. Our workshop will consist of five parts:
- We will begin with introductory remarks by Kika Tarsi (Chair, Student Section), followed by a short presentation by Josh Scholl (Treasurer, Student Section) on the importance of perseverance and a positive attitude in searching for and applying for funding.
- Next, Josh Scholl will present available sources and search engines for funding opportunities in ecology.
- A hands-on activity led by the officers of the Student Section will follow. Here participants will outline their professional goals both short term (1-2 yrs.) and long term (5-10 yrs.) as well as their relevant background (e.g. research and broader impacts).
- We will conclude with a panel discussion of 4-6 students who have been successful in gaining funding (e.g. NSF GRFP, Research Grants, etc.).
Registration Fee: $0
