Urban Bioblitz Along The American River Corridor

Sunday, August 10, 2014: 8:30 AM-3:00 PM
J Street Entrance, Sacramento Convention Center
Trip Leader:
Gillian Bowser
Co-leaders:
Harold Balbach and Dr. Luben Dimov
Join us on a trip to the American River Parkway, an urban wildlife area within Sacramento.  We will be joined by US Fish and Wildlife Service wildlife biologists and volunteers from the American River Parkway Foundation to help conduct an urban bioblitz.  The Applied Ecology Section has hosted an urban bioblitz each year and this year we are partnering with the Human Ecology Section and the Earth Stewardship Initiative along the American River Parkway to link species assessments with land planning, management and maintenance. We will add some new explorations of urban ecology including recreational areas, post-fire habitats and newly proposed restoration sites within the city limits.

Participants will work with community members, USFWS and the American River Parkway Foundation to collect and identify the biodiversity along the corridor.  Teams will focus on plant diversity, birds, insects and macro aquatic invertebrates so participants can get a broad exposure to the biodiversity of the Sacramento area.  A reference collection will be turned over to the local community as a part of this effort.

This bioblitz is part of the 2014 Earth Stewardship Initiative Demonstration Project.
