Green and brown infrastructure for urban transitions

Cities emerge from a dynamic interaction between local and global scale processes. We can manipulate these processes by recognizing our roles as urban ecosystem engineers to help cities transition to more sustainable and resilient forms.  What roles can ecological design and soil stewardship play in this transition to more sustainable forms of urbanism?  How do ecological and social processes interact to constrain or facilitate these transitions?  I discuss the concept of using ‘transition laboratories’ in the city to help integrate green design into urban landscapes.
