Recent restructuring of ecological programs at the US Department of Energy’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) have combined the previous Terrestrial Carbon Processes program and Programs in Ecosystem Research into a single Terrestrial Ecosystem Science (TES) program. In this Town Hall meeting, Program Managers will present the new mission focused TES vision and philosophy to the community and discuss future funding opportunities within BER. Specifically, the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment (NGEE), a 10- year, major program effort in the Arctic will be highlighted for community discussion. NGEE aims to understand, characterize and predictively model the response of permafrost ecosystems in a changing climate. The Town Hall meeting will engage the ESA community members to encourage discussion for synergies and leveraging opportunities within various phases of the NGEE program implementation. In addition, proposed collaborations with the 2014 Atmospheric Radiation Measurement deployment in the Amazon Basin, and future Ameriflux activities will be discussed. The goal of this meeting is to familiarize the participants with DOE’s new TES program activities and vision as well as solicit feedback on how best to communicate and support the ecological scientific community.
