The Traditional Ecological Knowledge Section, together with the Natural History Section and the South American Chapter, are co-hosting a South-North American Sense of Place Biocultural Event at the Lady Bird Johnson (LBJ) Wildflower Center, a 279-acre botanical garden showcasing native wildflowers, plants, and landscapes. Co-sponsored with the University of North Texas’ Center for Environmental Philosophy, the Indigenous Initiative, and the Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation, this biocultural event features ecologists, natural historians, environmental philosophers, and Indigenous speakers from South and North America to share their ecological and cultural knowledge and senses of place with the ESA community. The evening begins with guided natural and cultural history tours of the Wildflower Center, refreshments and buffet dinner exhibiting local organic foods, narrated cultural entertainment and interactive session with the Austin Eagle Point Drum Group and Dancers and a Lipan Apache elder and storyteller. It concludes with a presentation and reflections from the organizers, including a perspective from South America illustrated by the trailer of “El Regreso a la Madriguera,” a documentary about Field Environmental Philosophy. This cross-disciplinary, multicultural evening at LBJ Wildflower Center offers ample opportunity for multifaceted engagement and learning by ESA community members. By inviting North and South American Indigenous perspectives and philosophical and artistic voices not traditionally heard at ESA meetings, this biocultural event aims to spark a dialogue with ecologists and natural historians on the plurality of educational and ecological approaches needed for Earth stewardship. FT 16 is linked with SS 9 and SS 15 and SYMP 4 and SYMP 13. Registration Fee: $57 Equipment and Attire: Attire is casual to semi-formal. Walking shoes recommended.
