Organized by the Researchers at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions Section (R-PUI), this novel session will feature the approach of pair presentations given by undergraduate researchers with their mentors. One of ESA’s goals includes communicating the premise of earth stewardship to a broad range of audiences, especially students that may become future practitioners. Earth stewardship encompasses any number of research topics common to ecologists: effects of disturbance, impacts of exotic species, influences of resource enrichment on plant competition, issues of biodiversity as well as much more. As a example model for collaboration, we have solicited joint presentations by undergraduate students and faculty. We expect that this session will present successful, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to conducting high quality research at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs). We anticipate a range of topics from controls on biodiversity, pro-active efforts toward combating invasive species or physiological responses to climate change. Talks within this session possess a high probability of incorporating tenets of earth stewardship, especially considering that ecologists at PUIs dedicate significant time to teaching and outreach efforts in addition to research.
