This workshop is designed to present and obtain comments on outcomes of a special 3-day session addressing rangeland landscape pattern and fragmentation convened by the Sustainable Rangelands Roundtable in November 2007. Workshop moderator and panel members will provide an overview of products derived from and decisions made at the SRR 2007 session covering topics including: shrubland and grassland landscape pattern metrics proposed by the Heinz Center; pros and cons of satellite imagery and aerial photography for measurement of rangeland landscape pattern; differences in tracking changes in land-use patterns and land-cover patterns; comparison of requirements met by techniques for forest landscape pattern assessment with requirements to be addressed for rangeland systems; and identification of future research needs to adequately assess rangeland landscape pattern and fragmentation issues. Prior to the proposed rangeland landscape pattern workshop at the 2008 Ecological Society of America meeting, registered workshop participants will be provided with an electronic draft copy of the white paper produced following the 2007 SRR session. Presentations and structured discussions during the workshop will augment information included in this 2007 SRR white paper. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to review these 2007 session outcomes and provide input on possible improvements and/or additions to identified metrics and methods for assessing rangeland landscape pattern. Participants will also be able to recommend areas for future research and technological development of applications to enhance assessment of rangeland landscape pattern.
